The United Nations’ World Day of Social Justice, marks an ideal opportunity to reflect on individuals that have conducted visionary and exemplary work to combat global problems. It is fitting then, that nominations for the 2018 Right Livelihood Award, widely known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize”, are open – and that everyone is welcome to propose candidates.
“We are seeking courageous candidates from all walks of life who are leading change. Don’t miss the chance to propose a candidate for the Right Livelihood Award if you know of any such person or organisation” said Ole von Uexkull, Executive Director of the Right Livelihood Award Foundation.
The Right Livelihood Award is not for the world’s political, scientific or economic elite. Instead, it is an award for the people: for their work and their struggles for a just, peaceful and sustainable world for all.
Receiving the Right Livelihood Award can be life-changing. It provides recognition of the Laureates’ work, opens many new doors, and helps Laureates to achieve an even greater impact. For some Laureates, the award can help protect their life and liberty.
“We see our role as being both megaphone and shield for the Laureates and promise them long term support. Our protection programme provides tailored support to Laureates who are threatened due to the nature of their work which often opposes powerful political and corporate interests” said Ole von Uexkull.
The deadline for submitting a nomination is March 1, 2018. There are no special categories – the world is complex, everything is connected. Health, environment, education, peace, culture, economics, justice, and democracy are some examples of issues the 170 Right Livelihood Award Laureates from 69 different countries work with.

As is stated in the guidelines, it is asked that proposals for the award remain confidential and will not be published, as publicising of a proposal will unfortunately result in disqualification.

About the Right Livelihood Award
The Right Livelihood Award was established in 1980 to “honour and support courageous people and organisations”. It has become widely known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize”. Every year, there are more than 100 proposals for the Right Livelihood Award. Four recipients are chosen each year by an international jury after extensive research by the Foundation’s research team. The 2018 Laureates will be announced at a press conference in Stockholm in the end of September this year.
