Chilean government defered to US demands

News 09.03.2011

The Chilean Government changed environmental laws to please U.S. interests in the country, as Wikileaks cables revealed.

The Chilean  Supreme Court stopped the construction of the Campiche thermoelectric plant, owned by a US company, in 2009. The then US ambassador met with the Housing and Urban Planning minister Patricia Poblete, telling her he expected her to “solve the problem”. As a result the law prohibiting the construction was changed.

Juan Pablo Orrego (Chile, RLA 1998) points out that the “complicity between the government and private companies has allowed projects that are highly destructive.”
