Two Laureates speak out against nuclear reactor in Northern Argentina

Argentine environmentalist Raúl Montenegro (RLA 2004) and Paraguayan human rights defender Martín Almada (RLA 2002) condemn the Argentine government’s intention to install a nuclear power reactor that would affect the region along the Paraguay River.

In a press release distributed on March 11, FUNAM president Montenegro revealed the 5 possible locations for the construction of the nuclear reactor Carem 150 in the province Formosa. This information had been kept secret by provincial and national governments since 2011. Another reactor, Carem 25, is currently in the early stages of construction in the province of Buenos Aires. Both are illegal.

The press release coincided with the second anniversary of the nuclear disaster in Fukushima (Japan). Both Laureates warned about the dangers of nuclear power and promoted the use of alternative sources.
