Four days. Over one hundred choices: Decisions that can shape futures

This week, the 2025 Right Livelihood Jury gathers online, connected across continents, time zones and struggles, to take on one of the most pivotal tasks of the year: choosing the next four Laureates.

This defining process has taken place 46 times since 1980, and with this year’s decision, the community of change-makers will surpass 200 Laureates worldwide.

While the planet reels from climate tipping points, democratic backsliding, wars and technological disruption, imagine what it is like for the Jury to sit down with a 600-page report in hand, heavy with stories from every corner of the globe, each illuminating a different way forward. These are not just voices calling for change: they are people whose work delivers tangible impact, improving lives and offering models that can be adapted across borders facing the same injustices. In this mountain of evidence, the Jury looks for something rare: proof that solutions exist, and that people everywhere are already building them.

Behind the scenes of the process

The Right Livelihood Award begins with an open nomination process, where anyone can put forward individuals or organisations for consideration. The Award is then the result of a thorough research process that stretches from March to August. During this time, our team builds a clear picture of each nominee’s activities, achievements and reputation among peers. Independent experts are consulted, background materials are reviewed, and in some cases, nominees are visited on the ground. Every piece of information is treated with strict confidentiality.

From this work, detailed reports are submitted to the Jury: a diverse group of Right Livelihood Board members, previous Laureates and independent experts. In late August, they gather for four dedicated days of deliberation. By the end, they decide on who will be honoured.

More than an award

Being named a Right Livelihood Laureate is not a one-time recognition. It is an ongoing relationship. Laureates become part of a global community, connected to each other and our network for greater impact. We amplify their voices, foster collaborations, and—when needed—provide security and protection so they can continue their vital work.

This enduring support ensures that the Award is not only about recognition, but also about resilience and long-term change.

Looking ahead

The deliberations are confidential, but their significance is global. Out of these four days, four names will emerge. Four new Laureates who will join a community of visionaries showing that even in uncertain times, hope is not only alive. It’s leading the way.

Join us on October 1, when the 2025 Right Livelihood Laureates will be announced at a press conference in Stockholm. More details soon.
